"Simply making disciples in the city"

For the last year and a half, a group of YWAM Amsterdam staff has been going out into Amsterdam Noord to meet new people, introduce Jesus to them and grow a network of disciples of Jesus.

Lately the group has been going out to a student living area and has had a positive experience doing so. “We see that students are spiritually really active and are eager to talk about what they believe.”

The group goes around and asks people for prayer requests to see the neighbourhood improve and if they’d like, what they could pray for them for personally.

“Most of the time people mention criminality, the wish for more social cohesion in the neighbourhood or sometimes simply the lack of parking space.”

“People have also shared before how ‘stuck’ they feel or how they can only feel the darkness, but after we pray for them, they thank us saying we’ve made their day. After a good conversation, we ask if they’d like to continue another time over coffee.”

A big inspiration for the initiative can be found in Luke 10 where Jesus tells the disciples to go door by door to give a blessing where ever they’re welcomed and to just continue if you don’t find an open door.

When you think about how Jesus talks about it here, it’s actually a pretty relaxed attitude towards discipleship.

This realisation started an exploration journey about discipleship over the last few years and has drawn from the experience of disciple making movements in Africa, China and Indonesia and was cultivated more at YWAM Heidebeek in their connect group ministry.

“One time a guy invited us into his apartment and we talked a little bit about faith and life. He was in the middle of making a big decision wether to continue his studies or to quit and start working. He felt encouraged when we prayed for him and then started to have bible studies with us in the weeks after.”

The aim is to start a movement of disciple makers. “We’ve invited him to think about who he can include in his journey of getting to know Jesus.”

The group now consists of 6 members reaching out several times a week and hopes to slowly but broadly see a multiplication of disciples of Jesus in Amsterdam.
